Last fall I participated in an Artificial Intelligence for Ministry webinar, and now I use AI almost every week. You’ve probably seen news headlines about ChatGPT from OpenAI and Microsoft. I use ChatGPT just about every week to help create images for worship. I type in a specific prompt using a Bible verse, and I include size and focus specifications. Within 30 seconds, I get a copyright free image from ChatGPT that is realistic and vivid.
Images help the stories of the Bible impact our hearts and minds (hello?! Have you ever seen a children’s bible – pictures galore!). Now artificial intelligence helps create amazing images without the need for a professional graphic designer.
EXCEPT…Artificial Intelligence is not always perfect. For example – this week we will discuss Moses and God’s covenant with Israel through the Ten Commandments. When I entered the details I was looking for, AI gave me the image this image:
Instead of one Moses, they included TEN MOSES’ in the image. Whoops! AI image generation can still make mistakes, and this was a big one! I asked ChatGPT to edit the image, and I got a much better image that you will see on Sunday.
This coming Sunday we will learn that Moses probably would have liked nine extra helpers. He was doubtful about God’s choice to use him to help liberate the Hebrews from 400 years of slavery in Egypt. But God knew Moses was the right choice, and God renewed God’s covenant with God’s people by remembering Israel and delivering them from their suffering. I look forward to sharing this covenant story with you this Sunday!
