Happy New Year church!

As we begin a new year, it’s wonderful to see new and old faces in worship on Sunday mornings. For us “old timers” remember that welcoming new people with warmth and hospitality is an essential part of our faith and our purpose as an inclusive congregation.

Walking through the doors of an unfamiliar church for the first time is scary and takes nerve (unless you are a highly caffeinated extrovert!). Church statistics tell us that over 90% of people who attend church for the first time have had a life change in the past 3 months – divorce, death or grief loss, job loss/change, recent move to new area. They are searching for a sense of hope and community, just like you once looked for, too! So, it’s vital that when we notice someone knew, we connect with them in an honest, warm, and authentic way.

Here’s a couple reminders for all of us:

Don’t say “You look new!” or “Who are you?” – that puts people off.

With a handshake or wave, say “I’m ________. How are you today?” or “You may not know me – I’m _________”. Focus on introducing yourself and listening.

– Are they looking for something – bathroom, bulletin, trash can? Help them find their way.

– Do they have kids? Hand them an activity bag (Thank you Betty!) from the back pew or remind them the service is livestreamed in the fellowship hall and there’s an activity table for kids and families with the wiggles.

– If you notice someone new within a few pews of you, make a point to say hello or good morning as you introduce yourself.

Thank you for helping us start the New Year by welcoming all God’s beloved people with warmth and friendship. Who knows – your smile or greeting may make a difference for others in the week ahead.

New Year Blessings,

Pastor Jared
