Happy Birthday Church!
Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost, the birthday of the church! It was the moment when – 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus and his ascension to heaven – the disciples received the Holy Spirit. The Spirit proved to be a gift that sustained the disciples and transformed them into the apostles (Greek Apostolos: messenger, one who is sent).
Pentecost was special this year because our nine United Methodist Churches of the Greater Flathead Valley joined together in worship at Flathead Lake United Methodist Camp. We sang, prayed, and fellowshipped together under the sun and by the shore. And as the final words of the benediction were spoken, we felt that RUSH of wind off the lake (a sign from God!?!) that reminded us of the winds of the Spirit the first apostles felt long ago!
About 130 people gathered at camp for Pentecost, and together we raised almost $3000 to support the capital campaign of the camp to improve facilities for the next 100 years of ministry at that sacred location.
