Happy Autumn Church,
Last Sunday we reflected on the strange story of the workers who all got the same wage despite working different hours. Unfair! When the landowner pays the 5:00 PM crew the exact same daily wage as those who sweated through twelve hours in the blazing heat, the all-day crew grumbles. The owner did not cheat them out of their agreed wage, but he shattered their sense of seniority and hierarchy.
We live in a culture that runs strictly on merit, hours logged, and seniority. Yet in the Kingdom of God, the landowner pays the workers not according to the market value of their labor, but according to the sacred value of their lives. If the latecomers had received only an hour’s wage, their families might have gone hungry that night.
Christ invites us to step out of the exhausting game of comparing scorecards and step into a community where abundant mercy matters far more than money or status.
